Kress Building – Spartanburg

The Kress Building was built in 1929 and designed by George E. Mackay, head of Kress’s architectural division. S. H. Kress & Co. was the trading name of a chain of “five and dime” stores. After S. H. Kress died 1955, the Genesco department store chain bought his stores and closed them all by 1980.
