The Crofts Block Building was built in 1884. The build was built for George William Croft. Croft was studying at the SC Military Academy (combination of the Arsenal and the Citadel) when he was drafted as a boy soldier for the Confederacy. Croft studied law at the University of Virginia and started practicing law in 1869. Croft became active in politics and became part of the Red Shirts, which were known for violent intimidation of voters. In the state legislature, Croft was an advocate of laws prohibiting children from working. Croft would later donate land for the Aiken Institute to be built. Croft was elected to the US House, but died in the first year of his first term.
