Granite Building – Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Learning Center

The Granite Building in Mayesville was built ca. 1895. The building is now the Mary McLeod Bethune Learning Center. Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune was born in Mayesville. Dr. Bethune founded the National Council for Negro Women in 1935 and was appointed as a national adviser to president Franklin D. Roosevelt. Dr. Bethune started a private school for African-American students in Daytona Beach, Florida that developed into the Bethune-Cookman University.
