
Patrick Ferguson, born 1744 in Scotland, was a Scottish officer in the British Army. Ferguson the designer of the Ferguson rifle. Legend says that in 1777, Ferguson had the opportunity to shoot George Washington as he rode away but refused to because it was unprofessional to shoot the enemy in the back. Ferguson was the commander of the British Troops at the Battle of Kings Mountain and was killed in that battle, which is considered the turning point in the American Revolution.
