The Maverick House was built ca. early 1800s in the former town of Stateburg. Samuel Augustus Maverick was the last Maverick to own the Maverick House. Samuel Maverick is the claimed source of the word Maverick due to his actions in Texas and is the namesake of Maverick County in TX.
