Rankin-Harwell House – The Columns

The Rankin-Harwell House (aka The Columns) was built in 1857 for William Rogers Johnson, a physician, planter, and state legislator. The second owner’s wife (Mrs. Walter L. Rankin) named it “The Columns.” Locals dubbed the house “Carolina Hall” for its role in the 1934 film known as Carolina which starred Lionel Barrymore (great-uncle of Drew Barrymore), Janet Gaynor and a new child actress, Shirley Temple.
