The Colonel (honorary) James Arthur Banks house was built ca.1893 as a residence for South Carolina State Representative and State Senator Col. J. A. Banks, and rebuilt in 1909-1910. Banks was a prominent merchant, farmer, banker that served as Mayor of St. Matthews, on the school board, State House and State Representative. He also served as the President of the State Fair Association and State Warehouse Association
