The congregation moved to this location in 1824 and built a church here that was burned by Union troops at the end of the Civil War. This building was originally the Ascension Episcopal Church of Gillisonville, built ca. 1847. In 1867, it was purchased from Ascension and moved to its present location

In the very early years of the warehouse, the Bull Durham Tobacco Company bought advertising rights and painted the warehouse with their “Bull Durham” logo. That is how the old cotton warehouse became what is now known as the Bull Durham Center

Clarence Jr. continued running this store at this location until 1980. The building then was used by George Dean for Dean’s Ltd

The Rosenwald Fund matched local donations to built the school at a cost of $3,225. The Rosenwald Fund was established in 1917 by Julius Rosenwald and his family for “the well-being of mankind.” Rosenwald became part-owner of Sears, Roebuck and Company in 1895, serving as its president from 1908 to 1922, and chairman of its board of directors until his death in 1932
