Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church of Darlington

The Rembert Methodist Church is believed to be one of the earliest Methodist congregations in South Carolina, organizing in 1785. The first church was built in 1797. The cemetery was established in 1800 and the present meeting house style church was built ca. 1835. The congregation was relocated in 1962, but the building is still used for special occasions

Liberty Hill AME Church near Summerton was founded in 1867. This building was built in 1905 in wood and brick veneer was added in the 1940s. Nineteen members of this congregation were plaintiffs in the case of Briggs v. Elliott, heard in U.S. District Court in Charleston in 1952. Although the three-judge panel refused to abolish racial segregation in South Carolina schools, a dissenting opinion influenced the Supreme Court’s decision in Brown v. Board of Education

The Church of the Holy Cross was built in 1850. It was built on land donated earlier by American Revolutionary War General Thomas Sumter and was designed by Edward C. Jones. The church originally began in 1788, when worshipers from the chapel of ease started the first Episcopal church on this site, the Church of Claremont. Buried here is Joel Roberts Poinsett, a botanist, the first US Ambassador to Mexico, member of the US House of Representatives, co-founder of what is known today as the Smithsonian Institution, and the Poinsettia is named for him

The Little River Baptist Church was built in 1845. The church started as Gibson’s Meeting House and was established in 1768. The original meeting house was the site of a Revolutionary War battle and the current building was damaged by Union troops during the Civil War

The Catholic Presbyterian Church was organized in 1759 and this current structure was built in 1842. A granite marker at the church commemorates the sixty-two soldiers from the church who fought in the Revolutionary War. The church graveyard is one of the most well maintained and organized graveyards I have seen

The Providence Presbyterian Church was organized and built in 1842 as the results of the merger of the Providence and New Harmony Presbyterian church that were both in the Lowndesville area. The church was remodeled in 1886 adding the campanile and removing the slave gallery

The Mt. Joy Baptist Church in Kelton (Jonesville) was organized in 1876. This building was erected in 1924. This church was mainly organized through the ministerial labors of Elder T. J. Taylor and constituted November 30th, 1876
