It was sold to Wade Hampton I in 1823. it was used as a headquarters for the Union Army in February of 1865 and later saved by a local nun during the Burning of Columbia

In 1826, the Furman Academy and Theological Institution was established in Edgefield as a result of efforts by the church. The Academy later became Furman University in Greenville

Its namesake, Phillip Givhan, was a ferry master on the Edisto River and operated Givhan’s Ferry, which allowed access between Augusta and Charleston
